About Arlene Joynes

Arlene Tatum Joynes started writing poetry at the early age of eight as a way to express her thoughts and feelings. Born the second oldest of seven children, she was quiet and shy.

After graduating from Howard University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Business Administration/Accounting Degree, she embarked on an accounting career. While an employee of a nonprofit organization, she wrote the poem “Homelessness” to be read at the dedication ceremony of a women’s shelter.
